Renewing Your Colorado Driver License
A Colorado drivers license renewal can be accomplished in one of three ways: online, by mail, or in person. However, not all motorists are allowed to renew drivers ...
Colorado residents have the option to renew drivers license credentials in multiple ways depending on their individual circumstances.
Many CO drivers are eligible to renew their driver license online, while others may prefer to submit a paper application in-person or by mail. In Colorado, the driving license renewal fee is the same no matter how you choose to submit your renewal application. Drivers can renew an expiring drivers license from a few months before the expiration to up until a year afterward without having to pay extra fees or retake any driving exams. Exceptions to these time limitations can be made for residents currently out of state, military personnel and other select groups.
In Colorado, all applications to renew a drivers license are received and managed by the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), which is overseen by the Colorado Department of Revenue. The CO DMV allows residents to renew drivers license online if they are an adult between the 21 and 65 years of age, while minors and adults younger than 21 years of age are required to visit a CO DMV office for a renewal. The same photo, address and fingerprints used on your previous license will be used on your new license if you choose to renew online. Colorado residents who choose to renew their drivers license online will also need to have an active credit or debit card and email address to be able to successfully submit the application.
Applicants who are not eligible to renew their drivers license online or who prefer to submit an application in another way can do so. CO residents can begin renewing drivers license credentials on paper by printing out and completing the renewal application packet offline and gathering the necessary supporting evidence and preparing the fee. Once ready, the applicant can choose to hand deliver the application packet with the driving license renewal fee or mail it into their nearest CO DMV office. Depending on your specific situation, you may be required to include other information such as proof of citizenship or state residency in your application as well.
When renewing their drivers license at a DMV in Colorado, residents should also be aware that they will most likely have to pass a vision screening test and provide an official signature capture. Colorado drivers who do not renew their drivers license that is expiring will have their driving privileges suspended until the necessary renewal paperwork is taken care of. In addition, CO residents applying for a renewal from out-of-state can either apply for a renewal online or request an extension from the DMV until they return to the state.
